FIFA and UEFA accused of “abuse of power”
The Court of Justice of the European Union (EU) ruled on Thursday in favor of the Super League, which can now be “resurrected” after the ongoing conflict with FIFA and UEFA since its launch in April 2021. In a statement, FIFA and UEFA are accused by the EU Court of Justice of “abuse of power”.
“The rules of FIFA and UEFA, which make any project for a new soccer club competition subject to prior authorization, such as the Super League, and which prohibit clubs and players from participating in such competitions, on pain of sanctions, are considered illegal,” the statement also reads.
Bernd Reichart, CEO of the Super League, reacted to the decision: “We have won the right to compete. UEFA’s monopoly is over. Soccer is free. Now clubs will no longer suffer threats and sanctions and will be free to decide their own future. For the fans: we’ll broadcast all Super League matches for free. For the clubs: revenue and solidarity payments are guaranteed.”
The Super League project was initiated by 12 European clubs: AC Milan, Inter, Juventus, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham, Atlético Madrid, Barcelona and Real Madrid.
