Sadiq Umar has been ruled out of Africa’s largest football tournament due to an injury, just as the event is set to commence in Ivory Coast on Saturday.
The Real Sociedad striker becomes the third player to withdraw from the Super Eagles’ AFCON squad, following Wilfred Ndidi and Victor Boniface.
The Super Eagles’ official page issued the following statement, indicating that Paul Onuachu will replace Umar.
“Sadiq Umar is out of the AFCON 2023 squad due to injury, and Paul Onuachu will replace him,” the statement read.
Onuachu has scored nine goals in 15 matches for Trabzonspor in the Turkish Super Lig this season.
Nigeria will kick off their AFCON Group A campaign with a match against Equatorial Guinea on Sunday.
