Algeria’s Coach Djamel Belmadi Resigns Amidst Africa Cup of Nations Exit

Algeria’s national football team coach, Djamel Belmadi, has resigned following the team’s disappointing group-stage exit from the Africa Cup of Nations.

Algerian Football Federation president Wali Sadi announced on Wednesday that he has mutually agreed to terminate Belmadi’s contract, acknowledging the “bitter elimination” from the tournament.

“We express our gratitude to Coach Djamel Belmadi for his contributions to the team and extend our best wishes for success in his future endeavors” wrote Sadi on X, formerly Twitter.

In their final group match, Algeria suffered a 1-0 defeat to Mauritania, leaving the two-time champion with only two points from three games. Despite needing just a draw to advance, the Desert Foxes fell short.

Mauritania’s victory marked their inaugural Africa Cup triumph in only their third participation in the tournament.

Group D concluded with Angola leading on seven points, Burkina Faso following with four, and Mauritania securing a spot in the knockout stage with three.

Belmadi reportedly conveyed his decision to step down to the team after the match, prompting a furious reaction from Algerian fans. Scuffles ensued at the team hotel as supporters sought to reach Belmadi and his players.
