Ademola Lookman has stolen the spotlight from superstar Victor Osimhen in Nigeria’s campaign towards the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations, with the former England youth international scoring all the goals so far in the knockout stage.
While the current African Player of the Year, Osimhen, hasn’t found the net in the tournament since the 1-1 draw of the Super Eagles with Equatorial Guinea, Lookman scored two goals in the 2-0 victory over Cameroon in the round of 16 and then the lone goal in the 1-0 triumph over Angola in the quarter-finals.
Nigeria may need Lookman to continue this streak against South Africa on Wednesday, as Osimhen is doubtful due to an abdominal issue.
Most of the analysis of Nigeria has focused on Osimhen’s goal drought, as well as the approach taken by coach José Peseiro, who has managed to emphasize not conceding goals.
“I chose a different strategy. The players believe in it – not to concede goals because we will score at least one,” Peseiro said in a press conference in Abidjan.
