Following a foul by Dayot Upamecano that resulted in a penalty deciding the match, the French defender faced racist insults on social media.
Bayern Munich, seeking to recover from a 3-0 Bundesliga loss to Leverkusen, faced disappointment in the Champions League round of 16 first leg.
The game remained level until the 67th minute when Upamecano’s challenge on Gustav Isaksen in the penalty area led to a penalty for Lazio. Upamecano received a red card, ruling him out of the March 5 second leg. Ciro Immobile capitalized on the penalty, securing a 1-0 lead for Lazio.
This action led some fans to address Upamecano disparagingly with a series of racist insults and “absolutely disgusting” messages, as the German champions declared on X (formerly Twitter).
“Bayern condemns them in the strongest possible terms. Anyone who makes such comments is not a supporter of our club – we’re on your side, Upa!” the club added.
