The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has given its tentative agreement for the next Africa Cup of Nations to take place in July-August 2025 in Morocco, a sports official based in Cairo told AFP on Monday.
In early February, CAF President Patrice Motsepe declined to specify a date for the postponement of the Africa Cup of Nations, initially scheduled for January-February 2025. The Africa Cup of Nations will be held in the summer, coinciding with FIFA’s first major Club World Cup featuring 32 teams, from June 15 to July 13, in the United States.
On Monday, an official from the committee responsible for the competitions told AFP, on condition of anonymity, that there is “a tentative agreement between CAF and the Moroccan Football Federation for the Africa Cup of Nations to take place during the summer, specifically in July and August” of 2025.
“This agreement was reached under the auspices of FIFA after discussions that began several months ago and intensified during the last edition, which concluded this month in Ivory Coast,” he continued.
“The currently proposed dates are from July 20 to August 16 or 17, 2025,” he concluded.
The two previous Africa Cup of Nations tournaments have already been postponed. CAN-2021 was played in January-February 2022 in Cameroon, and the most recent Africa Cup, still officially named CAN-2023, began on January 13 in Ivory Coast, before being won by the host country a week ago.
Qualification for CAN-2025 has not yet begun. A preliminary round is scheduled from March 18 to 26, according to the CAF calendar.
CAN-2027 will be contested in three countries: Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
