At the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal and FC Porto made history this Tuesday. Almost eight years later, a UEFA Champions League match saw a penalty shoot-out. The Gunners won 4-2 after a 1-1 aggregate result in the two legs, progressing to the quarter-finals.
The last penalty shoot-out in the Champions League took place in the 2015/2016 final, when Real Madrid beat Atlético Madrid 5-3 at San Siro to win the title.
In the 2015/2016 edition, there was also a penalty shoot-out in the round of 16, which involved Atlético de Madrid. Atlético de Madrid beat PSV 8-7 at the old Vicente Calderón stadium.
Penalty shoot-outs are infrequent in the Champions League. The match between Arsenal and FC Porto marked the 17th penalty shoot-out in the modern era (since 1992/93) and the 10th in two-legged matches.
Atlético de Madrid, Bayern Munich and Chelsea lead the way in the number of penalty shoot-outs, with three each, followed by Arsenal and FC Porto, with two each.
