Bayern Munich put in an excellent performance in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final. However, coach Tuchel believes Bayern could have achieved more than a draw after an incident involving Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes in the Londoners’ penalty area.
“It was a difficult match against a very strong opponent and a fantastic crowd. The atmosphere was fantastic for the home team. After going 1-0 down, we reacted very well. Overall, it was a very good team effort.”
I think the referee (Glenn Nyberg) didn’t have the courage to award a deserved penalty in a rather crazy and embarrassing situation. He admitted on the pitch that he’d seen the situation and that the quarter-finals weren’t enough for him to award a penalty. He admitted that he had seen the mistake the player had made he said.
“It was a goal kick, the goalkeeper made a pass to a central defender and one of them touched the ball with his hand because he thought it wasn’t in play, but it was in play and the referee admitted it was in play and it was a hand ball. It was very frustrating” he continued.
