Borussia Dortmund’s decision to repatriate Jadon Sancho during the winter transfer window has proved to be the right one, especially ahead of the crucial Champions League quarter-final against Atlético Madrid next Tuesday.
In the first meeting at the Metropolitano stadium, Atlético Madrid dominated Dortmund for the first 60 minutes, taking advantage of defensive lapses to score twice. However, Edin Terzić’s side showed resilience, reducing the deficit in the final minutes thanks to a goal from Sébastien Haller, keeping their hopes alive for the return leg at the Westfalenstadion despite the 2-1 defeat.
Sancho, after returning to Dortmund, has been outstanding in attack, despite being well marked by César Azpilicueta. The talented 24-year-old Englishman seems to have regained his form after a patchy spell at Manchester United.
Borussia Dortmund have a tradition of developing young talents who then go on to shine at big European clubs. Sancho is just one example, alongside the likes of Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham, who became key players at Manchester City and Real Madrid respectively. However, Sancho has had his ups and downs.
He was trained in Manchester City’s youth system and joined Dortmund at the age of 17 in 2017. During his time at the German club, Sancho amassed around 50 assists in the Bundesliga and scored around 50 goals in all competitions.
