Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini praised his team’s performance and recognised that the draw against Marseille (1-1) at the Vélodrome in the first leg of the Europa League semi-finals was important.
“We had to suffer tonight, especially in attack, but this is an important result because they’ve only lost to PSG on this pitch”, said Gian Piero Gasperini, analysing Atalanta’s 1-1 draw at Marseille on Sky.
A draw that came thanks to a Scamacca goal, which the Orbetian coach analysed: “I was expecting more attacking play from Scamacca, but they made a great play on goal, in this type of game it will be essential to repeat this type of situation in Bergamo.”
Asked about Kolasinac’s departure through injury, the Nerazzurri coach lamented the misfortune.
“For us it was a big loss, we had to adapt from Roon and fewer substitutions in the final. For us it’s a serious injury, we’ll see how long it takes, but in defence they were very good at limiting his outbursts“, he explained.
For the second leg, Gasperini made it clear that a change of regime is needed, given the value of the opposition.
“I don’t have much faith in Marseille, who reached the semi-finals, which means they played a good game away from home. The results weren’t up to the same standard as at home, but they’re a good team with values, also on a physical level. We have to play a great game, we have a great opportunity, of course at this stage we want to go to the final“, said the Atalanta coach.
