Manchester United’s Cameroonian goalkeeper, André Onana, has shared his thoughts on his first season with the Manchester club.
As the season draws to a close, Onana has reflected on his debut year at the Red Devils. Snatched from Inter for a fee of €50 million last summer, the Lions Indomptables’ goalkeeper (38 caps) disappointed, particularly in the league and Champions League, before regaining his usual form.
“It was really tough”
The 28-year-old doesn’t shy away from admitting that this season was challenging. However, he sees it as a valuable learning experience. “Yes, it was really tough [at the beginning], but it was the first time I found myself in such a situation. Now, I know the league, I know the people, I know the country, I know Manchester,” he revealed in an interview shared on the club’s official website.
Though he admits to doubting his choice in the midst of the storm, to the extent of considering skipping the Africa Cup of Nations with the national team to avoid worsening his situation at the club, the Nkol Ngok native says he doesn’t regret his decision.
“Looking back, I smile because it was a big lesson for me. At first, I wondered if I had made the right choice. But I am 100% sure that I made the right choice because Manchester United is the biggest club in this country, it is one of the biggest clubs in the world,” he emphasized. “Who would refuse to come and play for this magnificent club?”
Eighth in the Premier League with three matches to go and qualified for the FA Cup final against Manchester City, Onana and MU are still in contention for a place in the Europa League. The Champions League, however, is out of reach.
