Originally planned for January-February 2025, there’s now speculation suggesting that the AFCON 2025 might take place during the summer. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has tentatively agreed for the tournament to be held in July-August 2025 in Morocco.

To prevent any clashes with the first 32-team Club World Cup set for June 2025, CAF President Patrice Motsepe has refrained from providing the exact dates for the postponed AFCON. However, on Monday, an official from the committee overseeing competitions, as reported by RFI, stated that “there is a tentative agreement between CAF and the Moroccan Football Federation for the AFCON to be held in the summer, specifically in July and August of 2025.”

This isn’t the inaugural delay for the African tournament. The two preceding AFCONs experienced postponements. AFCON 2021 was held in January-February 2022 in Cameroon, while the latest African Cup, still officially referred to as AFCON 2023, commenced on January 13 in Côte d’Ivoire, culminating with the host country’s victory a week ago.

Qualifying matches for AFCON 2025 have yet to commence. As per the CAF calendar, a preliminary round is slated from March 18 to 26.
