The competitions department of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed that Jean-Louis Gasset, by stepping down, has given up the right to be considered the winner of the tournament, should Ivory Coast beat Nigeria in the final.
His hasty dismissal after the defeat against Equatorial Guinea surprised the team, which was eventually rescued as one of the best third-placed finishers. Emerse Faé took over as coach from the round of 16.
Recently, CAF announced that Gasset’s dismissal disqualifies him from receiving medals in the event of his former team winning the African Cup of Nations final.
This rule was criticized by the players themselves, as expressed by Seko Fofana, highlighting Gasset’s contribution to the team’s success, despite his early departure.
