The International Sports Press Association has strongly criticized the conduct of journalists at the Africa Cup of Nations, denouncing their “deplorable” behavior.
AIPS emphasized the importance of journalists maintaining proper behavior and exercising restraint in their profession. During the tournament, accredited reporters were observed wearing national team jerseys, openly supporting their teams, and even engaging in celebratory actions like dancing shirtless after victories.
“Being a journalist means behaving properly, and above all, exercising restraint. Certain behaviours are simply unworthy of a profession as noble as journalism”, said AIPS.
Incidents of heated arguments among media personnel, exacerbated by chaotic organization and frequent schedule changes, were also reported.
AIPS expressed concern over the distressing spectacle created by certain colleagues, transforming media workspaces into scenes of conflict or even celebratory zones.
“Between pitched battles, attacks, invectives, it is a distressing spectacle that certain colleagues have been delivering to the world since the start of CAN 2023”, AIPS wrote.
