The Angolan government, through the Ministry of Youth and Sports, refuted on Wednesday the president of FAF, who recently stated that the Angolan football team participated in the African Cup of Nations without financial support from the state.
The information was provided by the secretary-general of the Ministry, Cátia Teixeira, who deemed the statements of Artur Almeida e Silva, leader of the Angolan Football Federation, as misleading.
“The Ministry of Youth and Sports expresses total repudiation for the unacceptable statements made by Mr. Artur Almeida e Silva, president of FAF, who alleges lack of financial support from the state to the Angolan national team in the African Cup of Nations, as these assertions are not only misleading but also disrespectful,” said Cátia Teixeira.
According to the secretary-general, the information that the Angolan team arrived at the CAN without any financial support from the state “is a pure distortion of facts, and the reasons for these false revelations are unknown.”
“The Ministry of Youth and Sports affirms, categorically, that the Angolan state took appropriate measures to provide monetary resources, within the limits of financial capacity and budgetary allocation, to ensure the participation of our team in the competition,” she assured.
When Angola reached the round of 16, the president of FAF stated that the Angolan football team had not received financial support from the Angolan state and had to incur debt to cover expenses in the competition.
Angola reached the quarter-finals of the African Cup of Nations (CAN-2023), after losing 1-0 to Nigeria in Abidjan.
