The journey to the 2025 AFCON officially commences as the Confederation of African Football unveils the preliminary round draw. Held today at CAFโs headquarters in Cairo, the draw featured the participation of the eight lowest-ranked teams in the latest FIFA ranking.
In the initial fixtures, the matches will be hosted in the country mentioned first. Somalia will clash with Eswatini in Somalia, Sao Tome will face South Sudan in Sao Tome, Chad will compete against Mauritius in Chad, and Djibouti will challenge Liberia in Djibouti.
For the subsequent leg, the hosting order is reversed. Eswatini will host Somalia, South Sudan will welcome Sao Tome, Mauritius will play host to Chad, and Liberia will enjoy home advantage against Djibouti.

Scheduled to occur on a home and away basis between March 20 and 26, 2024, these matches align with the upcoming FIFA window scheduled from March 18 to 26.
As March 18 and 19 typically serve as player release dates, the matches are slated to kick off on the 20th of the month.
Following FIFA regulations, each national team will enjoy a two-day break between the first and second leg matches.
Victors of the preliminary round contests will progress to join the 44 exempted teams for the tournament’s group stage. However, only 24 teams will ultimately secure berths in the AFCON 2025 finals, scheduled to unfold in Morocco during the summer.
