A diverse team from a small Atlantic island is excelling in the African Cup of Nations: Cape Verde’s Blue Sharks want to extend their fairy tale.
When Ryan Mendes converted the penalty that sent the Blue Sharks through to the next round, a wave of joy swept across the country. The inhabitants of the modest capital, Praia, anticipated their beloved carnival, celebrating in the streets and paying homage to the heroes again and again.
The small volcanic island nation’s remarkable progression to the quarter-finals of the CAN shattered all expectations. The overjoyed players celebrated the unexpected success on the pitch with the vibrant war cry “Huh huh aaahh”, similar to the iconic Icelandic “Huh”.
Next up: South Africa. Following their 1-0 win over Mauritania, with a goal from Mendes in the 88th minute, the Blue Sharks are preparing for a crucial clash with South Africa on Saturday.
The team, made up of 24 players representing 24 clubs from 16 different countries, from Ireland and Moldova to the USA, Cyprus, Austria, France and Portugal, has been shining at the tournament in Ivory Coast, causing a sensation. And the story continues.
