The announcement came unexpectedly this Tuesday. The captain was suspended with no return date set.
At 34 years old, Emilio Nsué found a new lease of life in the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN). With five goals, the forward playing for Intercity in the third division of Spain emerged as the tournament’s top scorer, guiding Equatorial Guinea to the round of 16, where they fell to Guinea.
However, the fairy tale seems to have turned into a nightmare. This Tuesday, the Equatorial Guinea Football Federation announced that the player has been indefinitely suspended for “several serious disciplinary incidents” that allegedly occurred during the national team’s training camp at the CAN.
Having been capped 44 times for the national team and with stints at clubs like Mallorca, Real Sociedad, Middlesbrough, and Birmingham, Nsue is one of Equatorial Guinea’s most prominent players. This was his third appearance in the CAN, and it was by far his best performance (having scored only one goal in 10 matches in 2015 and 2021).
In addition to Nsue, Edu Ibán Salvador, who plays for Miedz Legnica, also faced disciplinary action for an incident that occurred on January 29 in Abidjan, the capital of Ivory Coast, which required police intervention. The 28-year-old winger started in all four matches for Equatorial Guinea and also has 44 international caps to his name.
