This is the eagerly anticipated match in the group stages of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Cote d’Ivoire 2023. The Elephants face off against the Super Eagles on Thursday, January 18, in their second Group A fixtures.
Nigeria, having been held to a 1-1 draw by Equatorial Guinea in their opening match, is up against Cote d’Ivoire, who secured a 2-0 victory over Guinea-Bissau.
CAFOnline had an exclusive interview with African football icon Jay-Jay Okocha to gather his thoughts ahead of this clash.
Nigeria is set to play its second TotalEnergies CAF AFCON match on Thursday against the host, Cote d’Ivoire. Do you anticipate a challenging match for the Super Eagles?
Absolutely! Every match is challenging, but when you play against the host country, it becomes even tougher. However, the beauty of football lies in winning against the best if you aim to be champions. In football, every match is tough. With proper preparation, there’s a chance of winning. While we recognize it will be a tough match, we also believe in our potential to secure a victory.
What do you think will be the key to winning this encounter?
I believe experience, desire, and mindset will be crucial. These professionals understand the significance of this match, and their mindset will determine the outcome.
Nigeria conceded a lead to draw against Equatorial Guinea. What are your thoughts on this match?
Contrary to what many people say, I don’t think we played poorly. There were several positive aspects in the match, with the only issue being the failure to capitalize on our opportunities. Creating numerous chances is a positive sign of a good team. While it might seem like two points lost, it’s a reminder that perfection is elusive, and there’s room for improvement.
Nigeria has high expectations for striker Victor Osimhen. As a legend of the Nigerian team, what does he need to meet these expectations?
Victor Osimhen is a world-class goalscorer, and he needs the support of his team. I believe he received that support in the first match. He is determined to rectify any mistakes, and we have confidence in him because we know he can shine in any competition.
Nigeria’s last encounter with Cote d’Ivoire was a loss in 2015. Does this play a factor?
Every match today is challenging, and relying too much on history isn’t wise. What matters is the current Côte d’Ivoire team we will face on Thursday. The difference between our two teams is not significant, making it a promising match.
You are a legend of African football and the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations. What does the tournament represent for an African footballer?
It’s immensely important for an African footballer because there’s nothing more gratifying than being an African champion, the best team in Africa. Winning or participating in the AFCON is priceless for us as Africans.
Who do you think is the favorite in this competition?
Naturally, my favorite is Nigeria (laughter). Let’s wait and see.
What are your thoughts on the title holders Senegal or Morocco, the semi-finalist of the last World Cup?
There are several teams with the potential to win. Senegal put up a good performance recently, and Morocco, having impressed at the World Cup, is expected to do well. However, teams like Cape Verde, Equatorial Guinea, and Angola cannot be overlooked; they have demonstrated the increasing difficulty of the AFCON. Additionally, the host country, Cote d’Ivoire, with strong fan support, will be a challenging opponent in the tournament. It’s too early to name a favorite.
