Paris Saint-Germain captain Marquinhos equalled defender Jean-Marc Pilorget’s record of 435 appearances for the French club in Saturday’s match against Clermont.
Marquinhos played his 435th match at the Parc des Princes after recovering from an Achilles tendon injury. He could surpass that record if he plays in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Barcelona on Wednesday.
Marquinhos, 29, joined PSG in July 2013 from Roma for a transfer fee of โฌ30m, quickly becoming a central figure in the ‘QSI era’ (Qatar Sports Investments) project, which bought the club in 2011. Idolised at the Parc des Princes and close to president Nasser Al-Khelaifi, Marquinhos has renewed his contract until 2028 and could set a new record for games played.
“I’m very proud to see a young man like Marquinhos, who has similarities with the player I was, break this record,” Pilorget, 65, told AFP. Pilorget was French champion with PSG in 1986, winning the club’s first title.
