Kylian Mbappe has informed PSG of his intention to depart from the club at the conclusion of the current season.
The French international conveyed his decision to PSG President Nasser Al-Khelaifi, as revealed by two individuals familiar with the matter speaking to The Associated Press.
Both sources requested anonymity as Mbappe has yet to publicly announce his decision.
One source mentioned that Mbappe, who has previously been courted by Real Madrid, did not specify his next destination.
PSG declined to comment on the matter. However, another source familiar with Mbappe’s decision mentioned that the details of his departure are still being negotiated with the club, and an official statement will be issued once the terms are finalized.
Mbappe, widely regarded as one of the premier players globally, will become a free agent at the conclusion of the season following a seven-year tenure with PSG.
Last year, he notified the club of his decision not to activate an extension to the contract he initially signed in 2022.
During the announcement of his last contract, PSG presented him at Parc des Princes holding a jersey with “2025” emblazoned on it, despite the actual contract running until 2024, with an option for an additional year. This incident reportedly displeased Mbappe, who also felt disappointed by the club’s failure to secure enough top-tier players.
While Madrid seems like the most probable destination for Mbappe, his departure from PSG is likely to spark a bidding war between a host of other clubs eager to sign the former World Cup winner.
