A particularly tense Luis de la Fuente appeared at the press conference on Friday, alongside the announcement of his squad for the friendly matches against Colombia and Brazil. This tension arose due to a flurry of questions about the loss of Brahim Diaz to Morocco, with many feeling that the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) did not do everything possible to retain the Real Madrid left winger. Diaz grew tired of waiting for the 2010 World Cup champions after his lone appearance on June 8, 2021, against Lithuania.
“It’s him (Brahim Diaz) who makes the decision,” de la Fuente initially responded. “It has become clear. Whoever wants to be here, is here. Everyone is where they want to be. It’s not a matter of affection. That’s it. No case, no debate. I haven’t demanded anything personally. (…) It was something in the air that if he didn’t come to Spain, he would go to Morocco. He accepted Morocco’s proposal and that’s it. Those who want to come, come. I haven’t called any players. I did it on occasion, exceptionally. I am very grateful to him for everything he has done, but I don’t have to call him or call the many other players who could come,” he added, somewhat annoyed.
