The former Manchester United midfielder spoke about the quality of Phil Foden, the Manchester City star, comparing him to Frank Lampard. Scholes argued that Foden is a player of higher quality than Lampard, who won the Premier League, the Champions League, and numerous other trophies with Chelsea.
“He’s a better footballer than Frank Lampard, but Frank Lampard scored goals and won championships for his club from midfield,” Scholes told Premier League Productions.
“Centre forwards are expected to do that. Haaland, we expect his numbers, we expect Michael’s (Owen) numbers when the team is playing well. But from a midfield point of view, you’ve got to grab the game by the scruff of the neck and say, ‘Right, I’m going to get us back in the game, I’m going to win championships, I’m going to win games.’ I think Frank Lampard was like that, and I think Phil Foden is starting to do that, in terms of goals,” added the former Manchester United midfielder.
“Phil Foden is a much better footballer than Frank Lampard, don’t get me wrong, but Frank won championships for his team because of the contribution he made in midfield, especially in big games. And with Phil Foden, I think we’re seeing the same kind of thing,” concluded Paul Scholes.
