The nominations for the Laureus World Sports Awards 2023 were unveiled on 26 February. Six finalists have been selected in each of the seven traditional categories.
Sébastien Haller is in the running for the prestigious Comeback of the Year award. After being diagnosed with testicular cancer shortly after joining Borussia Dortmund, he made his comeback after six months of treatment and surgery. He made a huge impact when his country won the 2023 African Cup of Nations.
The Ivorian striker will have to convince the judges with exceptional performances to win this title, against competition from five other athletes: Simoné Biles (Gymnastics), Katarina Johnson-Thompson (Athletics), Jamal Murray (Basketball), Siya Kolisi (Rugby) and Marketas Vondrousova (Tennis).
The Laureus World Comeback Award is an annual ceremony celebrating the remarkable achievements of sportsmen and women from around the world. This special award is presented to an athlete, team or sportsperson who has made a remarkable comeback to the world of sport, often after overcoming injury, illness or other major personal or professional challenges.
