Sébastien Haller secured Ivory Coast’s Africa Cup of Nations victory with a late goal, sealing a 2-1 win over Nigeria in the final. His strike in the 81st minute followed Franck Kessié’s earlier equalizer in the 62nd minute.
This triumph marked Ivory Coast’s third title in the tournament, adding to their victories in 1992 and 2015, both secured via penalty shootouts.
Max Gradel, a seasoned midfielder for Ivory Coast, reflected on the significance of representing his nation. Following the win, he expressed his gratitude for bringing joy to Ivorians and acknowledged the overwhelming emotions of the moment, indicating that he would need time to fully comprehend the achievement.
“The most important thing is that Ivorians are proud of the team and I think they are that tonight. Winning the Africa Cup this evening, there is nothing better, nothing better.”
Haller’s recent goal, following his return from an ankle injury and cancer treatment, marked a personal triumph. Nigeria’s Troost-Ekong scored against the run of play, but Ivory Coast dominated, with Nigeria struggling to equalize after Haller’s decisive goal.
Troost-Ekong’s previous goal in the group stage had initiated challenges for Ivory Coast, leading to a coaching change. However, Ivory Coast rallied with late victories over Senegal and Mali in the knockout stage, propelled by Haller’s crucial goals, including the semifinal winner against Congo, ultimately securing their place in the final.
Ivory Coast’s unlikely progression through the knockout stage as it overcame setback after setback convinced many devout Ivorians that God was on the team’s side.
“It was an extraordinary tournament” said interim coach Emerse Faé, the previous assistant who took over on his 40th birthday.
